Celebrating Friendship, Celebrating Big Moments
When Terra, a good friend from childhood (4th grade to be exact) told me she and Chris were getting married I was so excited for them. They truly are spirited adventurers as individuals and together supporting each others passions. Although our paths take us all over the world exploring near and far we have continued to keep in touch over the years and it is always a comfort to see her and catch up no matter how long it has been. When I received the invitation, I knew I just had to be there so making my plans for an adventure from Maine to San Francisco began. I actually avoided much of the planning, but I can talk more about that later. As the wedding approached, Terra asked if I would be one of a couple of friends taking photographs. In lieu of hiring for many aspects of the wedding, they were asking "talented friends" to share what they could and be a part of the day. I did not respond immediately. I was so deeply honored and well... to be perfectly honest... terrified. After a bit of thought and my writing caution to her that I would be happy to do what I could and reminding her that I really do not shoot weddings and events but would do my best. She of course happily stated that she would love for me to capture the day in my own style while also being a guest and enjoying the day. I took a deep breathe and agreed to myself I would do what I could to capture a few special moments for the day.
Let me set the scene for the Wedding Day: The night before we camped in Mount Tamalpais State Park (highly recommend if you are in the San Francisco area). Early the next morning we packed up our car (our home on wheels for the week) and set sail for Angel Island (a short ferry ride off the coast of San Francisco) . Once on the island I, along with a fellow adventurer traveling with me, could only think of one thing to do: go on an adventure and hike to the tallest peak. So off we went, speeding along the trail, engaging in fun conversation as we went (wishing we had thought to bring a bottle of water!). In pure San Francisco fashion it was still very foggy and the clouds had rolled in so much that we didn't have sweeping views of the bay. It was still a fantastic moment as we peeked out onto the fading harbor below. We stopped for about 15 seconds and then down we went... we had a wedding to catch. Swiftly down the mountain we went (it was not a big mountain but still a little silly to try and squeeze it in, though I am so glad we did!). At the bottom, we quickly threw off our packs, stripped out of hiking clothes, threw on wedding attire (I attempted to brush my hair a little I think) and off we went to the wedding.
It was quite an adventure, yet the best part had not yet begun. An afternoon reception and lunch on Angel Island followed by dancing at a spot in downtown San Francisco filled the day and evening. I had camera in hand capturing moments and enjoying the celebration. The next day it was off to adventure in Yosemite National Park. Upon returning to Maine, I moved to a new place and dived back into a few work obligations. I delayed editing photos a little, but I dove in sifting through photos and editing the ones I would share with Terra and Chris. Not my typical photos, yet these are images that are really meaningful to me being there to watch a good friend marry a wonderful adventure partner. So glad and honored to have been there to experience such beautiful moments (and this really is just a slice of the magic of the day). Congrats Terra & Chris!
